The lot is also home to television shows that include
Wheel of Fortune, King of Queens and -
as almost anyone in America can tell you -
Jeopardy! For obvious reasons of cost the
Wheel and
Jeopardy! sets will be empty and unlit if you are allowed to visit during
your tour, and this may be a source of some disappointment. If anything reveals the true magic worked by
Hollywood lighting, it is a game show set. You may be surprised by how cheap the actual sets appear to be
without the glitz.
Please keep in mind that these are working studios, so tour lengths and sights will vary. Most tours
start with a small collection of props, costumes and assorted exhibits collectively called the Sony
museum. If you want to freshen up or grab a snack before the actual tour gets underway, this would be
a good time as you are right by the snack area.
You may stop at the Thalberg building, named after MGM production chief Irving Thalberg. There you can see a display
featuring Best Picture Oscars
won by Columbia/TriStar over the years. There
is also the studio where Fred Astaire tirelessly
practiced, the famous Sony scoring and recording
studio, the extensive wardrobe/costume department,
the grip and lighting department, scenic department
and, of course, the sound stages!
